The noble bighorn sheep are a fascination for me. Hiking along the desert plateau, I seen many over the years, each siting seems like a gift. Bighorn sheep are not common as deer and they will quietly watch humans before moving. They blend so well in the craggy rocks they call home, that they can be hard to spot. I painted this sheep with folktales in mind. The sheep is surrounded with flitting birds and california poppies - like princess Fiona, from Shrek. The whimsy makes me smile.
Collage original painting - I cut up a small print of my original 36" x 36" painting of a "Big Horn Sheep in the Poppies". I glue parts of the print in a variety of shapes onto a birch panel. I paint with acrylics, draw with charcoal, graphite and pastel on and around the collage. The hand-work makes the painting surface "tender" so I seal it with UV imbued resin.
