Title: My Grandmother, Red Horse, Coyote

Notes: Inspiration – My grandmother, Catalina Ortiz Acosta, rode astride during the early 20th century when most women rode sidesaddle. She often rode a Calvary remount horse when she summered at her family ranch in Ortiz, Colorado, on the border of New Mexico. It is a complicated history, not easily parsed into the layers of caste defined by American history. I've painted her in Native clothing with a coyote as her spirit animal. The original pose for this image was based on one of the photos I have of her circa 1920. I added the coyote to symbolize her ability to thrive amid hostility, finding the beauty that compelled her to create. She was a concert musician, a woman and a Latina in the early 1900's California cultural context. It wasn't an easy journey. Her example as a creative who defined her life story on her own terms independent of the cultural mandates is my inspiration behind this image.
