Title: Golden State Bear

Inspiration: I love playing with the image of my native state flag. In this version, I began with an oil painting of a High Plateau west coast landscape. Over that, I layered my idea of huge California Poppies and signifiers for the flag. The turquoise outline of the California bear is in one of my favorite colors. The landscape underpainting comes through in areas, patterning the bear’s body with pine boughs and leaves. My grandmother, Catalina Ortiz Acosta, born in Los Angeles in 1904, filled in the gaps my history teachers missed, from her perspective as a Hispanic Californian with ancestral roots in what had been New Spain, then Mexico, then California. Her stories of battles and bears filled my imagination. The bear became to me a symbol of the past as a collection of secret moments and lives mostly hidden from view.
